报告人简介

Dr. Sergey Popov is a leading geophysicist of the Antarctic Division of the Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition, Russia, also associate professor of Saint Petersburg State University. For thirty years he studies Antarctica by radio-echo sounding and GPR, also subglacial lakes especially Lake Vostok.

报告简介

Russian (former Soviet) reflection seismic studies in Antarctica were commenced in 1956. In eight years, in 1964, radio-echo sounding research has been started. Since that time airborne RES surveys have covered about 5.5 million sq. km of icy continent discovering remarkable geographic objects such as Subglacial Gamburtsev Mountains, and allowed studies of Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, Amery Ice Shelf and Lambert Glacier. Ground-based investigations during the 1990s and 2000s revealed the structure of the Lake Vostok area and surveyed along the Mirny to Vostok and Progress to Vostok traverse routes. Also has been discovered the number of subglacial lakes.
