  Dr. Sergey Popov is a leading geophysicist of the Antarctic Division of the Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition, Russia, also associate professor of Saint Petersburg State University. For thirty years he studies Antarctica by radio-echo sounding and GPR, also subglacial lakes especially Lake Vostok.

报告简介

  Antarctica was discovered by the First Russian Antarctic expedition in 1820, but only at the end of the 19th century systematic scientific observations were started in Antarctica. They were carried out by scientific traverses. First International Geophysical Year (1957–1958) marked the beginning of systematic geophysical research in Antarctica. Scientific traverses were commenced by Russia again to study Lake Vostok discovered in 1993 and then, to investigate the Antarctic inland. They also yielded to discovering some more subglacial lakes.
