报告简介:
Satellite altimetry is a vital tool for monitoring changes in remote ice sheets, particularly in understanding the role of firn - the transitional phase between snow and ice. Firn's dynamic properties significantly impact the assessment of ice-sheet mass balance, a critical factor in predicting sea-level rise. In Greenland, firn refreezes approximately 50% of meltwater, reducing runoff into the oceans, while in Antarctica, it may contribute to the stability of ice shelves. However, warming trends since 1980 have already reduced firn pore space in Greenland, amplifying the effects of meltwater. Satellite altimetry enables the tracking of these changes, enhancing firn models and improving predictions of ice-sheet dynamics and future sea-level rise.

Sebastian B. Simonsen is a Senior Researcher at DTU Space, Technical University of Denmark. His research aims to estimate present-day changes in the cryosphere and resulting sea-level rise. This is made possible through combining both modelling of ice sheet dynamics and Earth Observation data processing and building on a foundation of hands-on experience with the high-Arctic environment by participating in numerous field campaigns. Here, machine learning applications have shown to be beneficial for making operational estimates of sea-level rise from the Greenland ice sheet.
