1. Program Name

Program a. Surveying Engineering

Program b. Geographical Information System

2. Overview

Tongji University, whose discipline of Surveying and Mapping enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad, is the only university in Shanghai with the subject of Surveying Engineering. By the year of 2012, the major of Surveying Engineering had cultivated over 3,000 excellent graduates, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and over 150 professors. Vast majority of the graduates have become backbones in their respective workplaces.

Currently, the College of Surveying and Geo-Informatics recruits around 80 undergraduate students each year, who will be distributed into two different undergraduate programs at the beginning of the third semester, i.e., Surveying Engineering and Geographic Information System.

3. Cultivation Goal of Undergraduate Programs

Geared to the future needs of national construction, we aim at cultivating outstanding talents, who have solid basic theoretical knowledge and professional practical skills, and are competent in working in various fields of basic surveying and mapping, vehicle navigation, surveying and mapping in construction projects, land and resources survey, development and application of geographic information system, remote sensing technology application, environmental protection and disaster prevention, geodynamics, and so on. Meanwhile, we hope to cultivate excellent graduates with a strong sense of leadership, innovation capability, continuous learning ability and international vision. Our graduates can work in surveying and mapping or aerospace government departments, design survey institutes, universities, surveying and mapping instrument manufacturers, GIS and RS software companies, and many other related organizations. The employment rate has stayed 100 percent in recent years, and our graduates are in short supply every year.

7. Internship and Practical Training

Practical training plays an important part in cultivating outstanding talents with innovation and practice ability, and the discipline of Surveying and Mapping features in high practicality. We have built up Survey Practice Bases in campus and GPS Control and Survey Practice Bases around the campus. By cooperating with government departments, such as Shanghai Surveying and Mapping Institute, Shanghai Urban Construction Design and Research Institute, etc., we also provide off-campus internship for our students.

8. Other Requirements

1) College English Course: Students who have passed the English exemption test can obtain the credits without taking the course of College English.

2) General Optional Courses: Students are recommended to take general optional courses and obtain at least 8 credits within semester 1-4; Non-art majors are required to take 1 optional course in art course group.

3) Bilingual Curricula: Students are required to take at least two bilingual courses.

4) Scientific Report: Students are required to attend at least four scientific reports on Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information.

5) Extracurricular Activities: Students are required to participate in extracurricular activities at least once, including voluntary work, laboratory experiment or engineering practice, etc..

6) Innovation Capacity Development Project: Students are required to complete the innovation capacity development project and obtain 2 credits by semester 6.
